IEC 61850 communication training

Time: October 22-24, 2019
Venue: National Taiwan University of Science and Technology  Organizer: National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering
Co-organizer: INFO TECH

Our IEC 16850 training course collected the following ratings in the evaluation scale from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest):

Training material rated 4.4

Competence of instructors rated 4.8

Significance to participant's work rated 3.9

Novelty of acquired information rated 3.8

General evaluation of the training rated 4.6

The participants especially underlined the value of hands-on exercises with INFO TECH testing and simulations tools as well as the possibility to learn communication analysis on the frame level using Infoshark program. Infoshark freeware program is an extended version of WireShark protocol analyzer with an advanced IEC 61850 message interpreter added by INFO TECH.

We would like to express special thanks to the host of our training, the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

INFO TECH signed a partnership agreement with RiverRay Inc. company from Taipei in Taiwan.

RiverRay recognizes INFO TECH competence in providing the source code library based implementations of the IEC 61850 communication in the intelligent devices and systems of power grid, proven by numerous customer references and the published list of the UCA IUG conformance certificates.

INFO TECH recognizes RiverRay competence in the area of smart grid applications, excellent references in the deployment of innovative solutions and their capability to conduct the market research in East Asia and ASEAN.

Both companies foresee East Asia and ASEAN region as leading the deployment of smart grid applications and henceforth join their strengths to proceed with marketing, sales and deployment of IEC 61850 based solutions.

Dr Wojciech E. Kozlowski was invited to give an approx. 2-hour keynote speech at the 2019 IEC 61850 Workshop organized on July 23, 2019 in Taipei by Chung Yuan Christian University, with co-organizers including Taiwan Power Company (TPC) and Taiwan Smart Grid Industry Association (TSGIA).

The goal of the Workshop was to support rapid introduction of the IEC 61850 standard and promotion of smart grid industry development. The event gethered about 100 specialists of electrical, electronic and software engineering from the industry and academia.

INFO TECH presentation was entitled "All we want from the IEC 61850 standard: comprehensive for users, well supported for product vendors."

The key topics of this presentation were:

  • IEC 61850 - the globally accepted standard for communication in power utility systems as yet another face of Internet times
  • IEC 61850 basics - explained to be tentatively comprehended in no more than 30 minutes
  • Testing and diagnosing IEC 61850 communication
  • Simulation of systems based on standardized description language
  • How to support Taiwanese companies in fast development of their own IEC 61850 conformant products
    • Is IEC 61850 a business case?
    • IEC 61850 deployment in products - why a mature source code library is a cornerstone

We would like to express special thanks to Professor Shi Lin Chen from Department of Electrical Engineering, Chung Yuan Christian University in Taoyuan, for the invitation and opportunity to contribute to this Workshop.

And our thanks are also due to over 100 representatives of Taiwanese companies, universities and government agencies for attending our speech at the 2019 IEC 61850 Workshop and for the opportunity to discuss the possible deployment scenarios for products and to establish direct contacts for future co-operation. The workshop was indeed followed by business meetings with 5 companies.

One of our co-operation plans was concluded by a traditional Chinese dinner in the interiors of ancient Rome - confirming that both of our cultural roots rely on the principle "pacta sund servanda".

And obviously the new chapter of INFO TECH history will be written in Chinese (traditional) - it is time to practice it.

IEC 61850 Ed.2 GOOSE performance test was performed on feeder protection relay Easergy P5F30 proving its conformance to performance class P2, still with perfect avarage application to application delays under 1 ms.

The implementation of the IEC 61850 communication interface in these products was done based on INFO TECH IEC 61850 Software Library and with the assistance of our team.

The UCA IUG IEC 61850-5 Edition 2 Performance Class P2 (10ms) certificate for Easergy P5F30 was issued on the 21st of May 2019.

In the first quarter of 2019 the UCA IEC 61850 Edition 2 conformance tests of Schneider Electric universal current protection relay Easergy P5U20, voltage protection relay Easergy P5V20 and motor protection relay Easergy P5M30 were successfully carried out at Schneider Electric IEC61850 lab in China.

The implementation of the IEC 61850 communication interface in these products was done based on INFO TECH IEC 61850 Software Library and with the assistance of our team.

The UCA IUG certificates of the IEC 61850 Ed.2 conformance Level B for Easergy P5U20, Easergy P5V20 and Easergy P5M30 were published in March and April 2019.
