61850 SCD Builder
System Configuration Tool for IEC 61850-based Projects
61850 SCD Builder is a system configuration tool that enables creation of SCD (System Configuration Description) files from ICD (IED Capability Description) files, following the bottom-up engineering approach defined in the IEC 61850-6 standard.
It supports system design and integration for substations and other automation systems using interoperable IEC 61850 devices.
Key Features
-
Supports Edition 1, Edition 2, and Amendment 1 to Edition 2 (Ed. 2.1) of the IEC 61850 standard.
-
Generates standard conformant SCD files based on the selected edition’s SCL schema.
-
IED-vendor independent – leverages IEC 61850 as a common interoperability framework.
-
Allows to add to the system and configure server IEDs, client devices, merging units, time servers.
-
Allows to configure datasets, control blocks (RCB, GoCB, MSVCB) and inputs (ExtRef).
-
GOOSE/SV binding visualization and configuration.
-
Built-in XML-level editor and checker with syntax validation.
-

Applicability
61850 SCD Builder is ideal for:
-
Building complete system configurations and documentation in line with IEC 61850 requirements.
-
Creating simulation-ready SCD files (e.g., for use with INFO TECH 61850 SCL Runner).
-
Modifying existing SCD files to reflect changes in the installed systems.
-
Learning and training the IEC 61850 based engineering process.
The tool is designed to be intuitive and easy to use, with integrated context-sensitive help (F1).
Additional Capabilities
-
Functional naming support for LD and LN instances (when permitted by imported ICD files).
-
Editing and removing control blocks, datasets, and inputs based on service capabilities.
-
Configuring GOOSE and SV communication views and generating connection lists.
-
Importing IID files for section-level updates.
- Checking and editing SCD files on XML level with detailed error feedback.
