In this year our open IEC 61850 training session was again organized in LINTE2 Laboratory of Gdansk University of Technology, gathering 14 participants from 8 companies and institutions. In co-operation with the staff of our host, Faculty of Electrical and Control Engineering, we managed to assure the mandatory safety conditions while still being able to run hands-on exercises and presentation of LINTE2 Laboratory facilities based on the IEC 61850 communication. Unfortunately, the safety regulations forced us to limit the number of seats in the training room, despite of the market interest.
Our IEC 61850 training course collected the following ratings in the evaluation scale from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest):
Training material rated 4.6
Competence of instructors rated 4.8
Significance to participant's work rated 3.8
Novelty of acquired information rated 4.0
General evaluation of the training rated 4.0
The following topics have been especially appreciated by the participants:
- essential add-ons and changes brought by Edition 2.1 of the standard with their demonstration already implemented in the INFO TECH toolsets,
- cybersecurity issues in accordance with the IEC 62351,
- processing of SCL files during the system engineering and the capability of system simulation based on SCL files,
- hands-on exercises with frame analysis for communication troubleshooting (using a new extended version of WireShark application was developed and provided by INFO TECH to enable complete MMS and GOOSE message interpretation in accordance with the IEC 61850 semantics).

In June 2020 INFO TECH has released a new version of 61850 Avenue toolset with new capabilities.
The client tool:
- supports secure connections using TLS,
- allows to search for specified objects of the server,
- offers an improved generation of an ICD file from the information explored from a server device.
GOOSE and SV toolsets allow to communicate not only over Ethernet network but also using routable communication over IP protocol.
Welcome to learn the details of the new release of the 61850 Avenue toolset.
INFO TECH testing and simulation tools for the IEC 61850 standard based communication are already licensed to over 100 companies and research institutions from 5 continents.

In April 2020 INFO TECH releases a new tool for testing and diagnosing the IEC 61850 communication - 61850 GOOSE System Viewer.
The program allows to import an SCD file (System Configuration Description) and visualize all configured GOOSE data flows among devices in the graphical connection diagram. In case of a large system the connection diagram may not fit to a single screen but the tool allows for an easy navigation in the context of any data flow: to a chosen IED, a chosen source data or a chosen destination.
GOOSE data flow can be also presented in the form of a list of all outgoing and all incoming data - with the possibility to use IED filters on both ends. The produced list can be exported into a text file.
61850 GOOSE System Viewer can be used for online monitoring of GOOSE communication in the running installation. In online mode the connections on the diagram and the transmissions in the list are marked with colors that describe whether:
- GOOSE transmission proceeds correctly with source and destination data marked with green background,
- GOOSE transmission has stopped (old data),
- an erroroneus frame has been detected,
- there is no transmission,
while any selected connection is distinguished with blue color.

The tool allows also to set up the monitoring for two additional views: the list of events (changes of data in GOOSE messages) and the list of alarms (based on user defined conditions on data in GOOSE messages).

In April 2020 INFO TECH has released a new version of 61850 SCL Runner toolset with extended simulation capabilities.
The toolset allows to use multiple network adapters with the possibility to assign a selected adapter to each IED before starting its simulation.
It is also possible to drive the simulation from the user defined program - using telnet communication with 61850 SCL Runner tool. Hence there is no need to learn any proprietary script language but just the syntax of few types of commands used over telnet. The installation package includes an example program (in Python) for driving the simulation process.
Welcome to learn the details of the new release of 61850 SCL Runner.

In February 2020 the IEC published new documents of the IEC 61850 standard - the new releases of parts 7-2, 7-3, 7-4, 8-1 and 9-2 appeared as Edition 2.1 (part 6 in Edition 2.1 was published already in 2018).
But Edition 2.1 shall not be treated as a new edition of the standard - formally and essentially this is Amendment 1 to Edition 2 (in short Am.1 Ed.2), which supersedes the former publications of the IEC 61850 standard Edition 2.
What comes to conformance testing in accordance with the procedures specified by the UCA International Users Group, please note that the latest published Ed.2 Server Test Procedures (version 2.0.1) and Client Test Procedures (version 1.1.1.) already incorporate a big subset of tissues included in the IEC 61850 Am.1 Ed.2. These test procedures will remain in use (without changes) until Am.1 Ed.2 Test Procedures are prepared and published (which is expected in Q4 2020). As a consequence, please be aware that by mid 2021 the testing of conformance to Edition 2 will finally become exclusively based on the IEC 61850 Am.1 Ed.2.
In March 2020 INFO TECH has already accomplished a detailed analysis of changes and extensions to the IEC 61850 standard brought by the published Am.1 Ed.2. Thus, we can assure that already in this year we will be able to support our customers-licensees with the updated source code of INFO TECH IEC61850 Software Library and with the updated toolsets for communication testing and simulation.
If one wonders whether Edition 2.1 is backward compatible with the former Edition 2 - the answer is the same as before with Edition 2 following Edition 1 of the IEC 61850 standard: unfortunately not in some still essential elements ...
